One of the first surveys undertaken on a site to satisfy planning requirements is a habitat survey. The most widely used methodology is a Phase 1 Habitat Survey which is undertaken in accordance with published guidelines (JNCC 2010).  Deviation from the guidelines is possible and depends on the nature of the site, however,  generally the Phase 1 Habitat Survey is recommended and extended to note the potential for protected species.

Higher botanical surveys such as National Vegetation Classification (NVC) surveys may sometimes be required following on from this initial survey if unusual habitats or plant communities are present.
